How a weekly darts night became something much bigger.

The Manor Darts Organisation didn't begin with a business plan. It grew from a group of people turning up every week to play darts.

Before MDO, I ran weekly darts vaults at The New Club in Wheatley. At the beginning, I barely knew any of the players. But week after week, the same faces kept coming back. Before long, 70–80% of the field was made up of regulars — and people who had started as strangers became friends.

It quickly became about much more than darts.

We held Summer Bank Holiday knockout tournaments, brought in food, ran raffles and finished the day with a disco. We also hosted a charity darts event for Oxford Head Injury Services and raised £900 in a single day.

Those events showed me what was possible when darts brought the right group of people together.

Over time, I realised that the part I enjoyed most wasn't simply running a darts competition. It was seeing the same people come back every week, watching friendships develop and creating an atmosphere where players of different abilities could enjoy being part of something.

Then came the lightbulb moment.

The New Club already had this fantastic hall and the space to have multiple dartboards running at the same time. Rather than just using that space for individual knockout events, I started thinking about what else we could create with it.

What if we had our own eight-team league — but instead of teams travelling around Oxfordshire to different pubs and clubs, every team played together, in the same hall, at the same time, every week?

Suddenly it made sense.

We already had the venue. We had the boards. Most importantly, we had the players and the community that had grown around them.

It could still have all the competitiveness of league darts, but with something a little different.

And it could be built around the people who had already made darts at the venue what it had become.

That idea became the Manor Masters League — and from there, the Manor Darts Organisation was born.

Today, MDO is about more than winning trophies. It's about league darts, competitions, rankings, friendships, good days out and giving local players something they feel part of.

Some of the people involved today are the same people who walked through the door when I didn't even know their names.

Now they're friends.

That's what MDO is to me.
